Birth & Growth of North County
Serenity House
Six women devoted to
saving the lives of female alcoholics founded North County Serenity
House (NCSH) in 1966 with the opening of a home in Poway. In 1972
the program moved to a home in Escondido. A growing need for residential
services led to the expansion of 27 beds at our flagship site.
Residential services expanded to drug abuse treatment as this
need grew and as relations between drug & alcohol abuse were
recognized. Serenity Too, a non-residential program, opened in
1990 to serve women who could not or did not need to access the
residential program.
Since 1990 NCSH has grown tremendously, adding, 4 homes for
women and children, a home for homeless women in the earliest
phases of recovery, a 140-bed residential facility, 2 child development
centers, a Learning Center, and administrative offices. In 2007, NCSH finished building Serenity Village, which helps meet the area’s need for affordable transitional housing through its 48 beds for women in recovery and their children.
